Water supply and CO2 emissions

Whether or not it’s heated, using mains water has an impact on your carbon footprint:

  • 1,000m³ of water takes 468 kWh to supply, producing 209kg of CO2 = 0.209kg CO2 per m3
  • 1,000m³ of wastewater takes 437 kWh to treat, producing 195 kg of CO2 = 0.195 kg CO2 per m3
  • 1 m³ of water takes 63.855 kWh to heat to 55ºC producing 15.726 kg CO2 per m3

It pays to rationalise your use of mains water. If you’d like us to help you do that, please complete our

Here are a few more ideas for reducing your wastage of heated water:

Water heating

  • Consider fitting solar thermal panels to provide at least some of the hot water your business needs
  • For larger premises consider a deep borehole heat conversion system
  • Use heat exchangers to recover and re-use lost heat

Pipework

  • Keep hot water pipes well insulated to avoid losing heat through radiation
